In an effort to measure emissions of thousands of vehicles under realistic conditions, concentrations of gas and particulate pollutants, were measured in the Frejus Tunnel that connects France and Italy over a one-month period. These measurements were combined with tunnel traffic data (number of vehicles, vehicle types, and average speed) to calculate the average emission rates of carse and tracks. The formation of secondary particulate matter from these emissions was also investigated.
